GhostAd: Hidden Google Play Adware Draining Devices
🔍 Check Point's Harmony Mobile Detection Team discovered a broad Android adware campaign on Google Play that operated as a persistent background advertising engine. Masquerading as benign utilities and emoji editors, the apps continued running after closure or reboot, quietly consuming battery and mobile data. The campaign, dubbed GhostAd, comprised at least 15 related apps, with five still available at discovery.

Malicious Android Apps on Google Play Reach 42M Downloads
🔒 A Zscaler report found 239 malicious Android apps on Google Play that were downloaded a combined 42 million times between June 2024 and May 2025, driven largely by adware, spyware, and banking trojans. Telemetry shows a 67% year-over-year increase in mobile-targeted malware, with adware now comprising roughly 69% of detections and spyware up 220% YoY. Zscaler highlights evolving strains such as Anatsa, Android Void, and Xnotice, and advises timely updates, strict app permissions, disabling unnecessary Accessibility access, and regular Play Protect scans.

Android adware: risks, techniques and removal advice
📱 Android adware can range from benign ad‑supported apps to intrusive PUAs that harvest data, perform click fraud, or hide to prevent removal. Detections rose by 160% in H1 2025, and sophisticated campaigns such as Kaleidoscope — which uses identical “evil twin” apps across official and third‑party stores — accounted for a substantial share of incidents. To reduce risk, only install apps from reputable developers and the Google Play Store, keep software updated, enable PUA detection in mobile security tools, and if infected disconnect, reboot to Safe Mode and remove suspicious apps or run a trusted scanner.
