You can configure audits and audit specifications as on-premises and publish logs to S3, CloudWatch, or both. When both destinations are enabled, publication completes only after successful upload to both services, and CloudWatch enables real-time log analysis. The feature is available in all AWS Commercial and GovCloud (US) Regions where RDS for SQL Server is offered.

🚀 Starting today, Amazon Aurora DSQL supports multi-Region clusters in four additional AWS Regions: Europe (Stockholm), Europe (Spain), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), and Asia Pacific (Singapore). Aurora DSQL is a serverless, distributed SQL database offering active-active high availability and multi-Region strong consistency. Each multi-Region cluster exposes writable endpoints in both peered Regions and provides a single logical database that stays available if one Region becomes unavailable.

🚀 Amazon RDS for Oracle now offers 1-year and 3-year Reserved Instances for R8i and M8i instances, delivering up to 53% savings versus On-Demand pricing. These instances use custom Intel Xeon 6 processors exclusive to AWS, offering improved performance and memory bandwidth over prior Intel-based instances. Reserved Instance benefits apply across Multi-AZ and Single-AZ configurations and include size flexibility for BYOL licensing. Purchase options are available via the AWS Console, CLI, or SDK in supported regions.

🔒 Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports restoring Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)-enabled databases to Multi-AZ instances and instances with a same-region read replica using native backup and restore. Previously, TDE restore was limited to Single-AZ, requiring disabling TDE or migrating to Single-AZ before restore. Back up your TDE certificate to Amazon S3, restore it to the RDS instance with the TDE option enabled, then restore the database backup from S3. This capability is available in all Regions where RDS for SQL Server is supported.

🆕 Amazon RDS for MySQL now supports community MySQL 9.7 in the Amazon RDS Database Preview Environment, enabling testing of the latest Long-Term Support release. The preview serves as a sandbox to evaluate new features, bug fixes, and security patches before general availability. Instances in the preview are retained up to 60 days and snapshots are limited to preview restores; pricing matches production RDS in the US East (Ohio) Region.

🔔 Amazon RDS now supports the latest Cumulative Updates (CU) and General Distribution Release (GDR) updates for Microsoft SQL Server, including specific builds for SQL Server 2016 SP3, 2017, 2019, and 2022. This designation enables customers to build and run applications subject to FedRAMP Moderate compliance using Aurora DSQL. Aurora DSQL is a serverless, distributed SQL database offering active-active high availability, multi-Region strong consistency, and virtually unlimited scale.

⚙️ AWS has expanded availability of Graviton4-based R8g instances for Amazon Aurora (MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible) and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB across multiple regions, and added M8g support in additional regions. These instances offer up to 40% better performance and up to 29% improved price/performance versus Graviton3 equivalents, with new 24xlarge and 48xlarge sizes providing up to 192 vCPUs, DDR5 memory at an 8:1 memory-to-vCPU ratio, and enhanced networking and EBS bandwidth. 🚀 Amazon RDS now supports R8gd instances in 12 additional regions and M8gd instances in 6 more regions, offering Optimized Reads for Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, RDS for MySQL, and RDS for MariaDB. These R8gd and M8gd instances provide up to 165% better throughput and up to 120% improved price-performance over R6g for Aurora PostgreSQL by using local NVMe SSDs for ephemeral data and extended caching. Customers can enable Optimized Reads via the AWS Console, CLI, or SDK by creating or modifying databases to use these instance types. 🔧 Amazon RDS now permits up to four storage modifications per database instance within a rolling 24-hour window. These changes let you increase size, change volume type, and adjust performance without incurring downtime, and a new modification can begin once the previous optimization completes. The feature is automatically enabled across Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MySQL, Db2, Oracle, and SQL Server in all commercial AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US).

🔔 Amazon Aurora DSQL change data capture (CDC) is now generally available, enabling real-time streaming of database changes to Amazon Kinesis Data Streams for event-driven architectures and data integration workflows. Aurora DSQL CDC captures insert, update, and delete operations as change events and delivers them to Kinesis Data Streams with no infrastructure to manage. Use CDC to synchronize microservices, trigger AWS Lambda, or route changes to Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon OpenSearch Service via Amazon Data Firehose. CDC streaming is available in all Regions where Aurora DSQL is offered and is designed to have zero impact on database workload performance.

🚀 Amazon Redshift RG instances, powered by AWS Graviton processors, are now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West) and (US-East). RG instances deliver up to 2.4x better performance than prior RA3 instances and offer ~30% lower price per vCPU while running Redshift’s vectorized data lake query engine for Apache Iceberg and Parquet. Available sizes are rg.xlarge and rg.4xlarge, and RA3 clusters can upgrade via Snapshot & Restore, Elastic Resize, or Classic Resize. Flexible pricing includes On-Demand and 1-/3-year Reserved Instances with multiple payment options.

🚀 Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports Oracle Database 26ai, Oracle's Long Term Support release, with integration to Amazon Bedrock providing access to foundation models such as Anthropic Claude, Amazon Nova, and Meta Llama. Oracle Database 26ai enables Select AI for generating and running SQL from natural language prompts and supports in-database RAG via Oracle AI Vector Search, avoiding the need for a separate vector store. The release also offers JSON Relational Duality Views and SQL Property Graphs and is available in Enterprise Edition across commercial and GovCloud regions.

🔁 This update announces availability of Cross-Region Automated Backup replication for Amazon RDS in four additional AWS Regions, enabling automated backup replication between specified region pairs. The feature replicates snapshots and transaction logs to a destination Region to support point-in-time restores and near-real-time recovery. It supports multiple RDS engines and can be configured via the RDS Console, AWS SDK, or CLI. Organizations can achieve Recovery Point Objectives within minutes by using this replication.

🔒 Amazon RDS for Db2 now lets customers join DB instances directly to self-managed Microsoft Active Directory domains, whether on-premises, in AWS, or in another cloud. Using Kerberos for authentication, this enables single sign-on and allows customers to authenticate and authorize database users without deploying AWS Managed Microsoft AD or creating a domain trust. Domain join is available when creating or modifying instances using a delegated AD service account stored in AWS Secrets Manager and encrypted with AWS KMS, and the feature is generally available in all Regions where RDS for Db2 is offered, including GovCloud.

🔒 Amazon RDS now supports dynamic connection rate scaling for IAM database authentication, so authentication throughput scales with instance resources. This allows enterprise workloads to use IAM authentication for high-volume connection patterns while depending on available CPU and memory. AWS recommends reusing IAM principals or authentication tokens to optimize performance. The feature is available in all Regions, including AWS GovCloud (US), for Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB.
