Amazon GuardDuty Malware Protection for AWS Backup

🔒 Amazon announced GuardDuty Malware Protection for AWS Backup, extending malware detection to backups of Amazon EC2 instances, Amazon EBS volumes, and Amazon S3 objects. The capability automatically scans new backups, supports on-demand scans of existing backups, and can identify the last known clean backup to reduce recovery impact. It offers incremental scanning to analyze only changed data between backups, lowering costs versus full rescans, and can be enabled even if GuardDuty foundational data sources are not active. The feature is available in supported Regions and accessible via the AWS Backup console, API, or CLI.

AWS Backup Adds Direct Primary Support for Air-Gapped Vaults

🔐 AWS Backup now lets customers designate a logically air-gapped vault as the primary backup target across backup plans, organization policies, and on-demand jobs. This removes the prior restriction that air-gapped vaults could only hold copies, enabling direct writes to the air-gapped store and reducing duplicate-storage costs. For resource types without full AWS Backup management support, the service still creates a temporary snapshot in a standard vault, copies it into the air-gapped vault, and then removes the temporary snapshot. The capability is available in all Regions that support logically air-gapped vaults and can be selected via the console, API, or CLI.

AWS Backup Adds Delegated Admin Support in 17 Regions

🔔 AWS Backup now supports delegated administrators in 17 additional AWS Regions, allowing designated accounts to manage backup operations and administrative tasks across member accounts. The expansion includes regions in Africa, Asia Pacific, Canada, Europe, Israel, Mexico, and the Middle East. The agent-free integration replaces custom scripts and third-party tools with a native, policy-driven service that offers automated scheduling, retention management, immutable vaults, and cross-Region and cross-account copies. You can restore entire clusters, specific namespaces, or individual persistent volumes to support disaster recovery, compliance, or pre-upgrade protection.

AWS Backup: Support for KMS Customer Managed Keys for Vaults

🔐 AWS Backup now lets you encrypt logically air-gapped vaults with your own AWS KMS customer managed keys (CMKs). This gives organizations more control over key lifecycle, access policies, and compliance posture while preserving the security benefits of logically air-gapped backups. Support covers same-account and cross-account CMKs and is available in all Regions where air-gapped vaults are supported. You can enable CMK encryption when creating vaults via the console, API, or CLI.

AWS Backup: Single-step Cross-Region Snapshot Copy

🔁 AWS Backup now supports a single-action copy of database snapshots across AWS Regions and accounts for Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Amazon Neptune, and Amazon DocumentDB. This eliminates the previous two-step process and removes the need for intermediate copies, custom scripts, or Lambda automation. The change reduces operational complexity and helps achieve faster RPOs while removing costs associated with intermediate snapshot storage. You can use the feature today via the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs.

AWS Backup Now Adds Schedule Preview for Backup Plans

🗓️ AWS Backup now provides a schedule preview for backup plans, displaying the next ten scheduled backup runs and showing when features such as continuous backup, indexing, or copy settings take effect. The preview consolidates all backup rules into a single timeline so you can quickly identify overlaps, gaps, or configuration conflicts. This capability is available in all AWS Regions and accessible from the AWS Backup console, API, or CLI without additional configuration.

AWS Backup Adds Detailed Job and Audit Report Fields

🔍 AWS Backup now returns more detailed metadata in job APIs and Backup Audit Manager reports to improve visibility into backup configuration and compliance. New fields in backup, copy, and restore job APIs expose retention settings, vault lock and type, encryption details, plan and rule names, schedules, and vault access policies. Delegated administrators can view job details across an organization. These fields are available today in supported Regions at no extra charge.

AWS Backup Launches in Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region

🔔 AWS Backup is now available in the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, offering centrally managed, policy-driven protection for compute, storage, and database resources. The fully managed service supports immutable recovery points and vaults to guard against accidental or malicious deletions and to enable reliable restores after data loss. Customers can set up protection via the console, SDKs, or CLI and assign resources using tags or Resource IDs.

AWS Backup adds option to exclude ACLs and ObjectTags

🔒 AWS Backup now lets you choose whether to include Access Control Lists (ACLs) and ObjectTags when backing up Amazon S3 buckets. Previously, these metadata elements were included for all objects by default; the new option lets administrators include only the metadata required for their recovery or compliance needs. AWS Backup Audit Manager Adds Organization-wide Reports

🔔 AWS has extended AWS Backup Audit Manager to produce organization-wide, cross-account and cross-Region reports in six additional Regions: Asia Pacific (Hyderabad, Jakarta, Melbourne), Europe (Spain, Zurich), and Middle East (UAE). Using an AWS Organizations management or delegated administrator account, you can aggregate compliance and operational backup data across accounts and Regions. The feature centralizes policy enforcement and helps demonstrate adherence to business and regulatory data protection requirements.
